Step by step: renting a private number in a Telegram bot, topping up the balance and reading incoming messages
Updated
A Telegram bot can work as a phone line: you rent a number, receive SMS and calls on it, and handle everything from a chat window. This guide walks through the full path, from funding the balance to reading the messages that arrive. The service we recommend for this is SMS Activate App, which rents private numbers and can be used on a website or inside Telegram.
What a private number rental means
A private number is rented to you alone for the length of the rental period. Other users of the same service do not share it while it is assigned to you. That is the main difference from shared or one-off numbers, which can pass through several hands in turn.
The number handles incoming traffic like a normal phone line. It can receive SMS messages and voice calls. People use it as a second line beside a personal phone, for services that send codes by text, or for any account that asks for a reachable number.
Keep in mind that the platform you register with decides which numbers it accepts. A rented number is a real number, but acceptance is not something a number provider can control.
- Private use during the rental period

Step 1: open the bot and top up the balance
Before you rent anything, the account balance needs to cover the rental fee. In the bot you will find a balance screen and a top-up option. The website version works the same way, so you can move between the two without losing anything.
Top-up methods:
Add at least the amount of the rental fee, and a bit more if you plan to keep the number and let it renew. If the balance runs out, automatic renewal stops.
- Bank card
- Cryptocurrency
Step 2: choose a country and rent the number
SMS Activate App, the service we recommend, rents private numbers for 28 days at a time, with prices from $8 per 28 days. Numbers are currently available in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Israel, Puerto Rico, Sweden, and United States.
In the bot, pick the country you need, look at the listed price, and confirm the rental. The number is then attached to your account, and you can copy it into the service where you want to use it.
The rental fee is non-refundable. Before you pay, check that the number fits your platform: look at the country, the number type and the rules of the service you are signing up for. If a platform does not accept rented numbers, no provider can change that.
- Open the bot or the website
- Pick the country and check the price
- Confirm the rental from the balance
- Copy the number into the platform you use
Step 3: read incoming SMS and calls
Once the number is active, incoming traffic shows up in the bot. SMS messages appear in the chat with the sender and the text, so you can read verification codes and other short messages without leaving Telegram.
You can also forward incoming SMS to another Telegram chat or to a webhook. A webhook is useful if you want the messages to reach a script or a tool of your own. Voice calls arrive on the number as well, and you can handle them from the same interface.
How quickly a message appears depends on the platform that sends it. The bot shows what arrives on the number, and nothing beyond that.
- Read SMS in the bot chat
- Forward SMS to another Telegram chat
- Forward SMS to a webhook
- Handle voice calls on the same number
Renewal and day-to-day management
A rental covers 28 days. After that, renewal is automatic every 28 days while the balance covers the fee, so the number stays with you without further action. If you would rather stop, switch the renewal off before the current period ends.
You can manage the number on the website or in Telegram: check the balance, top up, turn renewal on or off, and read messages in either place. Keeping the balance above one renewal fee is the simplest way to avoid an accidental stop.
Fund the balance, rent a private number for 28 days, and read the SMS and calls that arrive in the bot. Check that the number suits your platform before paying, since the rental fee is non-refundable.
